Benton (thomas hart) - N.-Amerik. staatsman, geb. 14 Maart 1782 te Hillsborough in Noord Carolina, overl. 10 April 1858 te Washington. Van 1820—1850 was hij lid van den Senaat. Zijn belang rijke memories: Thirty year's view of the Senate zagen in 1856 het licht.
