eigenlijk Webbe. Engelsch schrijver en kenner der noorsche letterkunde, geb. 1820 op St. Vincent, studeerde te Londen en te Oxford in de rechten, wijdde zich echter hoofdzakelijk aan de letteren, hij schreef „Translation of the prose or younger Edda’’ (1842), „Theophilus Eutychianus. from the original Greek, in Icelandic, Low-German and other languages” (1845). „The Norsemen in Iceland” (1858, in ,,Oxford Essays”]; van Asbjörnsen vertaalde hij „Populär tales from the Norse, with an introductory essay on the origin and, diffusion of populär tales” (1859); „Tales from the Fjeld” (1873): „ The story of Gistt, the outlaw” (1866); „ The Vikings of the Baltic, a tale of the North in the 10th Century (1875); verder schreef hij romans: „Annals of an eventful life” (3 dln., 5e druk 1870), „Three to one, or some passages out of the life ofAmicia, Lady Sweet-apple” (1872), en: Half a life (1874).
