Engels schrijver en onderzoeker, *16.12.1917 Minehead. Clarke studeerde aan de universiteit te Londen.
Daarna was hij radarspecialist in de Royal Air Force. Sinds 1954 was hij ook betrokken bij onderwateronderzoek, o.a. in het gebied van het Groot Barrièrerif en aan de kust van Sri Lanka. Vanaf 1952 besteedde Clarke een groot deel van zijn tijd aan het schrijven: hij publiceerde zowel populair-wetenschappelijke boeken op het gebied van astronomie, ruimtevaart en archeologie als science-fictionromans. Zijn werk werd verscheidene malen bekroond.
