Hij leidde opgravingen in Egypte (Abydos, Amarna, Armant) en Irak (Chorsabad, steden aan de Dijala) en genoot internationale vermaardheid door zijn publikaties op het gebied van vergelijkende archeologie, kunstgeschiedenis (speciaal over rolzegels en godsdienstgeschiedenis).
