Zwaagdijk-Oost in Wervershoof

betekenis & definitie

This ribbon village southwest of Wervershoof came into being as late-medieval peat extraction. From the 19th century, a number of large farmhouses, such as 'Land and Veelust' (Zwaagdijk 194, 1881) with elevated middle ressault and eclectic details, arose here. Somewhat younger is the polder farm Zwaagdijk 153 (circa 1910) with a dakerker and a mirror. The R.K. St. Joseph's Church (Zwaagdijk 186) is a wide three-aisled church with a slender bell tower near the choir. To H.P.J. de Vries this traditionalist church was built in 1952-'54 to replace a church from 1876.
