Wormer (municipality of Wormerland)

betekenis & definitie

Village originated as peat reclamation in the 12th century along an east-west running reclamation axis in the area between the Beemster and the Wijde Wormer. A first core formed around the current Herv. church at the Oosteinde. The village grew in a westerly direction alongside the peat stream channeled into the roadside.

This resulted in a densely built-up double-build ribbon, which continued in the 17th century to the present Zandweg. From the 17th century, along the Zaan and the Nieuwe Vaart, an important industrial center with many industrial mills arose. Especially the Wormer ship's bakeries - at a certain moment 130 pieces with eight associated corn mills - were known. After 1850 many of these mills lost their function and made room for brick factory buildings and warehouses. In 1888 there was a permanent bridge over the Zaan. After the Second World War, Wormer has expanded considerably on the west side. On the south side along the Zaan around 1995 a residential area has been set up on the grounds of the forem. paper factory of Van Gelder & amp; amp; Zn. (Eendrachtstraat).
