Venhuizen (municipality of Drechterland)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 12th century as peat reclamation. The staggered mining axis followed roughly an underlying creek back. A number of neighborhoods were formed: on the north side De Buurt / Westerbuurt, in the middle the buildings on the Burgemeester J. Zijpweg (with Herv. Church) and on the south side the Westeinde / Hemmerbuurt (with town hall and R.K. church). In 1913-'36 the tram line Hoorn-Bovenkarspel ran along this route. After the Second World War, the village expanded between the southern village centers.
