The White Cross building in IJmuiden

betekenis & definitie

(Kennemerlaan 143) is a prominent corner building in cubist expressionist style, built in 1929 to plans by J.C. Cramer. The town hall in IJmuiden (Plein 1945 45) was established in 1962-'65 to older plans of W.M. Dudok (1948 provisional and 1956 final design) as part of the reconstruction plan.

Four wings with concrete skeleton of different heights enclose a courtyard. On the square side there is a four-storey office wing with a framed balcony and a forward-looking council room on columns above the main entrance. A high tower with clockwork separates the representative and the administrative part. An extension from 1995 (O. Greiner) is connected to the old part via a glass walkway.
