The Spanish House in Naarden

betekenis & definitie

(Turfpoortstraat 27), a single-storey building with a basement room, was built as a chapel of the (demolished) late medieval guesthouse, which was in use at the end of the 16th century as a town hall. Here began in 1572 the bloody massacre by Spanish troops, in which the city was also set on fire. After the recovery in 1615, a weigh house had been accommodated for some time. Three facing bricks recall these events. In the 19th century the building served as a main guard and a garrison bakery was housed in the secret annexe. From 1924 to 1992 the Comenius Museum was housed. During a restoration in 1967, among other things, a 17th century oak wood paneling and a chimney breast with natural stone caryatids were inserted.
