The R.K. St. George's Church in Spierdijk

betekenis & definitie

(Spierdijkerweg 105) is a large three-aisled cross-church with three-sided closed choir, three-sided closed transept and a built-in façade tower with needle spits. This neoclassical church with round arch windows and blocked corner pilasters was built in 1849 -50 to W.D. van der Horst (enlarged 1864-'65). In 1886-87, the design by A. C. Bleijs followed an expansion with a higher transept and choir in neo-Renaissance forms. The interior of this church, which was restored in 1984, stands out because of the transition from the dark low ship to the slightly higher eastern part. The inventory includes a pulpit (circa 1850) and a main altar (1885).

The presbytery (Spierdijkerweg 107) dates from 1849. The churchyard 'Godsakker', built in 1827 on the other side of the street, has a cast iron cross with priest graves for H.A.F. Plekenpol († 1869) and J. Karsten († 1890). Furthermore, there is an H. Hartbeeld (1922).
