The pumping station of Rijnland in Spaarndam

betekenis & definitie

(Pol 52) was constructed in 1843-44 to drain the Haarlemmermeerringvaart, with discharge to the IJ (via Binnenliede and Zijkanaal C). This by J.A. Beijerinck's neoclassical elements designed pumping station has a T-shaped floor plan.

The original steam engine was renewed in 1876 and in 1890 the current iron paddles were placed with wooden blades. In 1930 the building suffered from fire. The two diesel engines (Werkspoor) installed in 1936 were replaced in a renovation in 1992 by Mirlees-Blackstone diesel engines, which power one of the original two rows with five scoops.
