The Portuguese-Isr cemetery in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

betekenis & definitie

'Beth Haim' (Kerkstraat 7) was founded in 1614 and came into use in 1616 (5376) - according to tradition at the location of the stamslot of the lords of Amstel. This picturesque cemetery, which was depicted several times by Jacob van Ruisdael, underwent expansions in 1663 and 1691, three times in the 19th century and finally in 1923. The house was built in 1705 by carpenter Jacob Gerritsen, internally changed in 1937 (H Elte) and restored in 1965-'67.

As part of the restoration plan for the cemetery (1997, A. Wille), the jetty of the steamer at the Bullewijk is equipped with a modern entrance gate. Around 1880, the seventeenth-century graves in the peat soil were restored on the initiative of D.H. de Castro, whose own grave is provided with a stone pillar with a covered vase († 5659/1898). Fine 17th-century examples are the four adjacent prism-shaped tombs for Samuel Jessurun de Mercado († 5412/1652), David de Mercado († 5442/1682), Jacob de Mercado († 5417/1656) and Rachel Jessurun Brandao († 5439/1679), and the prismatic seams for the doctor Eliahu Montalto († 5376/1616) and for Yshak Franco Medeyros († 5383/1623). The latter is raised on a few steps. At the tomb of Ishac Uziel († 5382/1622), such a tomb is covered with a red-marble carpet. There are bridges with linked bows for Ishac del Soto († 5438/1678) and his wife Ribca († 5432/1671) and for Mordechai Franco Mendes († 5448/1687) and his wife Sara Abendana († 5456/1696). Noteworthy are the double zerk for Daniël (de) Pinto († 5441/1681) and his son Moseh (de) Pinto († 5453/1692), the saber for Michaël de Espinoza († 5414/1654), father of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza, and the tombs for rabbi Menasseh ben Israel († 5418/1657), the physician Samuel Sarphati († 5626/1866) and rabbi IJ Palache († 5686/1926). For the latter, the zerk was made by J. Mendes da Costa (buried here in 1939).

At the cemetery is also the deep building Kerkstraat 10 with an 18th century tilted gable.
