The Lely grate in Medemblik

betekenis & definitie

(Zuiderdijkweg 22, municipality of Wieringermeer) is a monumental white plastered building, built in 1928-'30 with block-shaped volumes in functionalist style designed by D. Roosenburg. The pumping station was established for the purpose of the reclamation of the Wieringermeer and is therefore at the meeting of three channels.

The reclamation was completed with electric motors and centrifugal pumps supplied by Werkspoor Amsterdam in collaboration with the N.V. Elektrotechnische Industrie, formerly W. Smit in Slikkerveer. Also white, but then traditional in form, are the by M.J. Granpré Molière designed service houses (Zuiderdijkweg 18-20; 1929).
