The (Herv.) Grote Kerk in Westzaan

betekenis & definitie

(Kerkbuurt 37) is a cross-church with a quarter-round extension in each of the four inner corners. This church, built in 1740-'41 by Jan van der Streng's design, has a gable on the front with sculpture on the transition from Louis XV to Lodewijk V-style (Jan van Logteren). Mason Coenraet Hoeneker and the plasterers Hans Jacob and Hendrik Husly were also involved in the construction. From the predecessor of 1573 the tower was initially retained, but it collapsed in 1843. The church has been restored in 1967-'70.

The interior is covered by white plastered wooden barrel vaults. The inventory includes a pulpit on sculpted pedestal (pelican with young, circa 1740) and an organ built by Flaes and Brünjes (1866, restored in 2002). The form. presbytery (Kerkbuurt 30) is an eighteenth-century cross house with a central party that was raised around 1910.
