The Herv church in Schellinkhout

betekenis & definitie

(Dorpsweg 107), originally dedicated to St. Martinus, is a single-nave cross church with three-sided closed choir and a built-in tower of three sections with constricted needle spire. The gothic choir may still originate from the second half of the 14th century. The transept arose in the middle of the 15th century and the eastern part of the ship followed later that century. The western part of the ship and the tower came into being in the early 16th century. In the tower there is a clock cast by Geert van Wou (1526). The tower and the gables of the transept have a late-Gothic niche decoration. During the restoration in 1956-'59 the window tracings were changed.

The interior is covered by wooden barrel vaults with draw beams; wooden scales were placed on the corners of the crossing. In the fired western part of the ship, a primary school had been accommodated until 1872. The church inventory includes a mid-17th century pulpit and doophek, and an organ built by P. Flaes (1872).
