The Herv church in Oosterend

betekenis & definitie

(Kerkstraat 2), originally dedicated to St. Maarten, is a single-nave cross church with entrance portal and a tower of three sections with tent roof. The tufa ship dates from the 11th or 12th century. In the 15th century a new choir was established and in the 16th century (possibly 1566) the transept followed. The straight chancel with portal dates from 1724. In the 15th century, the tower articulated by circular arcades arose and was raised in the 17th or 18th century.

This tower, which was repaired and turned over in 1878, contains a clock (1598) cast by Hendrick Wegewaert. The church has been restored in 1968-'71. The interior contains a wooden partition (1645) with notched house brands, a pulpit (1683-'86) and an organ with mid-18th century elements. The presbytery (Oesterstraat 13) dates back to 1906.
