The foremost Landswerf in Medemblik

betekenis & definitie

(Landswerf 21-58) is an elongated three-layer building with angular riots and a middle ressault with a pediment with a national coat of arms and an eight-sided dome. The corner chimneys are crowned by wrought iron globes. This austere neoclassical building - originally with a passage in the middle - arose in 1798 for a plan of 1796 by Pieter Glavimans, but was rebuilt in 1800 after devastation by Russian and English troops (1799).

It served as the main building at Westerhaven, which was converted into a dock. In 1827 it was changed to T.F. Suys adapted for the Royal Institute for the Navy, which remained here until 1850. In 1884 the building came into use as the Rijks Madstones Founded. From 1922 to 1967 it was a provincial institution, after which only the main building remained. That building was converted into apartments in 1983-'84. Nearby is a bridge over the Westersingel with wrought iron gates in art nouveau forms (circa 1905).
