The Burgerweeshuis in Hoorn

betekenis & definitie

(Korte Achterstraat 4) consists of two right-angled wings that enclose a courtyard with a chapel. The Maria Monastery founded here in 1408 by Franciscan friars was decorated in 1574 as Protestants or Burgerweeshuis.

The simple two-storey facade is from 1729, as is the wing on the Turfhaven. The adjacent building parts on the east side may contain 16th-century traces. In 1729, the sandstone entrance gate was probably renewed. Given the hanging festoons, it originally dates from around 1660; the date '1620' will be added later. Lodewijk XV stucco from 1750-'60 is located in the hallway between the regents' rooms. The corner part of the complex was renovated in 1848. In 1958 the orphanage lost its function. The Mariakapel (Korte Achterstraat 2) was founded in 1435, rebuilt in stone in 1506 and arranged as an arsenal in 1573 (until 1795). The choir section has two 17th century vaulted cellars. In 1826-'27 the plastered façade was created with a neoclassical ionic entrance and the nave was given a raised floor when the chapel started serving as a Catholic church. After the building was burnt out in 1877, the Geref bought. church in ruin ruin and followed the restoration, where the chapel got the current facade termination. As a church, the building served until 1967, followed by restoration and interior design as an art center in 1993.
