Village on the Schermereiland, originated in the northern corner of the enclosure in the 13th century around this area, later the Eilandspolder. The adjacent Zwet connected the Schermermeer with the Beemstermeer and later the ring barge of the two polders. In 1502, Schermerhorn was given a chapel and, after draining the Schermer (1635), a connection with Alkmaar. The ribbon village suffered from village fires in 1699 and 1702. After the Second World War the village south of the Oosteinde was extended.
