Fishing village on the island of Texel, originally called 't Schilt. The village was founded at the beginning of the 17th century on the Schilsloot, from where barrels of drinking water from the wells at the 'Brakestein' farm were transported by small boats to the seagoing vessels at the Texel roads. On the elongated De Ruyterstraat resurrected warehouses. The harbor that was built in 1780 served first for oyster fishing, later for mussel and sea fishing. Until about 1930, we won, among other things for mattress fillings. A new, larger harbor for shrimp fishing was established in 1958 and some industry has established itself in the vicinity.
