Village, originated in the 12th century as peat extraction with a more or less parallel to the Zaan. The southern village part lived in the 17th century from trade and industry aimed at Amsterdam, the northern part had an agricultural character. At the northern hamlet De Haal, the Oostzaan station was opened in 1884 on the Zaandam-Purmerend railway line. After the Second World War, the southern part of Oostzaan has expanded considerably as a commuter village in Amsterdam.
