Noord-Scharwoude (municipality of Langedijk)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 11th century as one of the four elongated villages on the Langedijk. The medieval church burned down in 1934. The cabbage cultivated on the many small islands in the surrounding Geestmerambacht polder was sold in a vegetable auction from 1915 - after connection to the tram line to Alkmaar. The tram route was changed to a provincial road in 1934. After the land consolidation (1965-'74), Noord-Scharwoude has expanded considerably on both sides of the old ribbon development.
