Locks in Muiden

betekenis & definitie

The Groote Zeesluis (Herengracht approx.) Was constructed in 1674 against the danger of flooding of the Zuiderzee and the backwater of the Vecht. The double-barrier lock is flanked by a large and a small drainage lock (improved and enlarged 1809-'12).

In 1854, the lock complex also served as an inundation lock. After further adjustment in 1870 the complex was restored in 1976 and '05. Two smaller locks are located at the connecting points of the moat with the Vecht on the south side. The Weesperpoort lock was replaced in 1834 by the locks that were constructed in 1663 for the passage of barge boats towards Naarden - the lock guard house (Weesperstraat 113) was renovated in 1855 and the Keetpoldersluis (tip Herengracht) in 1855.
