Village, originated as peat reclamation in the 12th century along an east-west running reclamation axis in the area between the Beemster and the Wijde Wormer. Since 1630 Jisp is the center of the polder Wormer, Jisp and Neck. Characteristic is the road ditch along the Dorpsstraat. After a large bloom in the second half of the 17th century thanks to whaling, it went downhill economically. Shipyard yards, warehouses and mills disappeared. After the Second World War a small expansion area was set up in the inner corner between Dorpsstraat and Weiver.
