Huisduinen (municipality of Den Helder)

betekenis & definitie

Village in the dunes. A settlement situated more to the west and already mentioned in 866 disappeared into the sea in 1170 and a second village disappeared into the waves in 1570.

Inland, the current village followed, with a ramp (1574). With the construction in 1610 from the sand dike to Callantsoog (Van Oldenbarneveltsdijk) the area was no longer an island. The impoverished fishing village was surpassed in importance in the 17th century by (Old) Den Helder and came to lie in the defense line of Den Helder in 1811-'13. Huisduinen grew up with the establishment of a bath pavilion (1890) and the construction of a steam tram to Den Helder (1898 to 1918). The village, which was cleared in 1942, received a modest expansion after the war on the west side.
