Forts in Velsen

betekenis & definitie

To the east of Velsen-Noord are three fortified forts of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The defendable earthworks of these forts date from about 1895. For the closure and defense of the mouth of the North Sea Canal as far as the coastal fort IJmuiden, the forem. fort at Velsen (Kanaalweg 2).

The construction of the earthworks started here around 1885. From the bomb-free buildings from 1899, the two detached lifting dome buildings and the front building remain. The form. fort on the St. Aagtendijk (St. Aagtendijk approx.) in 1899 a caponnière, constructed in concrete, a bomb-free main building with two detached lifting dome buildings and a front building. Outside the fort site are a fort guardian's house, a wooden genie and a searchlight remise. A secondary battery (1903) is located south of the fort. The form. Fort Zuidwijkermeer (at Kanaalweg 15) covered the North Sea Canal. From 1903, a bomb-free main building, two free-standing lifting dome buildings and a front building, date. Between the two last mentioned forts lies the Zuidwijkerliniewal containing three dam locks. In 1894-'95 the powder magazine (at Zeedijk 11) was built with an earthen wall on three sides and a brick facade with access on the open throat side.
