Forts in Nederhorst den Berg

betekenis & definitie

The Voorm lies north of Nederhorst den Berg. Fort Hinderdam (near Hinderdam 18). At a lock constructed in 1437 in the Vecht, a ramp was erected in 1629. This had a key position for the inundations of the Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. The barrage was replaced in 1673 by a bastioned fort, situated on an island in the Vecht.

After the construction of the sea locks near Muiden, the sluice at Hinderdam disappeared. In 1848, the island fort received a defensible square guardhouse as part of the New Dutch Water Line. This guard house and the ramparts were changed in 1880. In 1913 the fort was transferred to the Defense Line of Amsterdam, after which a draw (1934), a concrete casemate (1934) and two group shelters (1939) were added. South of the village is the forem. Fort Kijkuit (Kleizuwe approx.), Built in 1844-'47 for the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie on the spot of a fortification from 1803. This fort served at the end of the Vreelandseweg and the adjacent Hilversums Kanaal. The square redoubt with rounded corners was extensively rebuilt in 1880. Changes were also made in 1886, including for artillery batteries. In 1933 a concrete casemate with steel front (1933) was added and in the vicinity some group shelters 'type P' (1939-'40). Both forts were removed as fortifications in 1954.
