Fort Kijkduin in Huisduinen

betekenis & definitie

(Admiraal Verheullplein 1) was built in 1811-'13 as a fort Morland on a dune on the spot of a coast guard station and is located southwest of the main defense belt of Den Helder. The masonry of the quadrangular reduit surrounded by a dry moat contained a coastal battery on the west side.

The lighthouse (1822) on the reduit was demolished in 1875. For the flames of the sea front, the fort received a cast-iron dome in 1897 (supplied by Schneider & amp; Co. at Le Creusot). In 1913-'16 an expansion followed in a south-westerly direction with, among other things, concrete trenches. A concrete roof installed in 1942 was demolished during the renovation into a museum and aquarium in 1996. On the forecourt there is a service home and a guard house.
