Cemeteries in Laren

betekenis & definitie

To the southwest of Laren there was already a church dedicated to St. John before 1300. This was the most important church of the area until the construction of the church in Laren (1521). The cemetery, center of seven 'death'

roads', remained since 1586 as' St.-Janskerkhof 'exist. An annual procession leads from the St. John's Basilica to the Brink to the cemetery. The R.K. cemetery (Hilversumseweg approx.) has a neo-Gothic open funeral chapel (circa 1880).

Beside it, in 1911, the Alg. cemetery (Hilversumseweg approx.), where a number of graves of painters of the Laren School is located. Furthermore, the painter and writer Wally Moes († 1918), the architects H.C. Elzinga († 1949) and W. Hamdorff († 1965), and ir.dr. V.W. van Gogh († 1978), cousin of the famous painter. The expressionist auditorium is covered with reeds.
