Schotsch philosoof en dichter, geb. 9 Jan. 1778 te Kirkmabreck, graafschap Kirkcudbright, werd in 1810 hoogleeraar te Edinburg en overl. 2 April 1820 te Londen; hoofdwerken: Observations on the Zoonomia of Erasinus Darwin (1798), Inquiry into the relation of cause and effect (1835), waarin hij Hume’s empirische philosophie met de leer der kerk zoekt te vereenigen, Lectures on the philosophy of the hwtian mvnd, een verzameling populaire opstellen.
