Noord-Amerik. bibliograaf, geb. te Philadelphia, 17 April 1816, overl. te Lucern, 2 Sept. 1889. Grondige kennis der Engelsche literatuur gaf hem meesterlijke verhandelingen daaromtrent in de pen, die in de North American Review werden opgenomen; in 1879 werd hij bibliothecaris der Lennox-Bibliotheek te New-York.
Zijn belangrijkste werken zijn: „A critical dictionary of English literature and British and American authors” (Philad. en Londen, 1859—72, 3 din.); — „ Alphabetical index to the New Testament1’; — „Poetical quotations from Chaucer to Tennyson” (1873); — „Prose quotations from Socrates to Macaulay” (1876): — „Great authors of all ages” (1880).
