Cox (Sir George William), Engelsch geschiedschrijver en oudheidkundige, geb. 1827 te Benares, overl. 1902 te Walmer; hij bezocht de school te Rugby en Trinity College te Oxford, werd in 1850 geestelijke, was van 1860-61 leeraar aan Cheltenham College, daarna weder geestelijke in Kent en Yorkshire, en volgde in 1877 zijn oom sir Edmund Cox op als vijftiende baronet; voorn. werken: Poems, legendary and historical (1850); Life of St. Boniface (1853); The great Persian war (1861); A manual of mythology in the form of question and answer (1867); The mythology of the Arjan nations (1870); A general history of Greece from the earliest period to the death of Alexander the Great (1876 en 1883); History of the establishment of British rule in India (1881); Introduction to science of comparative mythology and folklore (1881); Lives of Greek statesmen (1886); The life of J.W.
