Amerikaans psycholoog, *1.10.1915 New York. Bruner was hoogleraar aan de Harvard University, waar hij tot 1973 directeur van het Center for Cognitive Studies was; daarna werd hij hoogleraar te Oxford.
Hij werd bekend door zijn onderzoek omtrent de cognitieve leerprocessen en door zijn theorieën over opvoeding. In tegenstelling tot de psychoanalytische school en het behaviorisme, die de mens in hoge mate geconditioneerd achten, legt Bruner de nadruk op de mogelijkheden tot actief structureren van de kennisverwerving. In zijn pedagogische theorievorming werd hij sterk beïnvloed door vooraanstaande pedagogen zoals Jean Piaget.
