Amerikaans componist en pianist, *8.7.1900 Trenton (New Jersey), ✝ 12.2.1959 New York. Antheil studeerde bij E.Bloch.
In 1922 ging hij naar Europa, waar hij pianorecitals gaf. Hij nam een belangrijke plaats in in de Parijse avant-garde en werd vooral bekend door zijn ultramoderne, door jazz en I.F.Strawinsky beïnvloede composities, zoals Le ballet mécanique (1925). In 1936 ging Antheil naar Hollywood, waar hij filmmuziek schreef, o.a. voor Tokyo Joe (1949) en Fighting Kentuckians (1950). Na 1939 componeerde hij in een stijl die classicistische, romantische en impressionistische invloeden vertoonde. In 1945 verscheen zijn autobiografie Bad boy of music. Composities: Jazz symphony (1926), Crucifixion (1927); ballet: Dreams (1935), The cave within (1948), Capital of the world (1953); opera: Transatlantic (1930), Volpone (1953), The wish (1955), Venus in Africa (1957); zes symfonieën, kamer-, piano- en toneelmuziek, liederen.Litt.
